Vintage Plane Ride Los Angeles: Doors-Off in a 1940 Piper J-3 Cub
Low, slow, and open to the Pacific breeze—what it feels like to fly the Southern California coastline in our restored 1940 Piper J-3 Cub (N33141).

Some flights are about speed. This one is about feel. When you climb into our fully restored 1940 Piper J-3 Cub (tail number N33141) at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY), there is no window glass between you and the Pacific air. With the right-side door and window open, a 65-horsepower engine humming up front, and a relaxed top speed of 80 mph, a vintage plane ride in Los Angeles shows you Southern California the way early aviators saw it—low, slow, and unhurried.
Whether you are a photographer looking for glass-free coastline views, a history fan drawn to classic WWII-era tailwheel airplanes, or someone who wants the most freeing flight in the basin, here is what to expect on our Vintage Piper Cub Doors-Off Flight.
Meet N33141: The 1940 Piper J-3 Cub That Taught America to Fly
First flown in the late 1930s, the yellow Piper J-3 Cub became the primary trainer that taught a generation of Americans to fly during the World War II era. Flying one today is a direct link to aviation's golden age.
Our Piper J-3 Cub, N33141, is restored as a 1940 model and maintained above standard by our in-house team of FAA-certified mechanics at Van Nuys Airport. Its specs on Our Fleet tell the story:
- Aircraft and tail number: Restored 1940 Piper J-3 Cub, N33141
- Power and pace: 65 horsepower, an 80 mph top speed, and a 200-mile range—slow enough to linger over every view.
- Tandem seating: 2 seats arranged one behind the other, meaning room for 1 guest plus your Certified Flight Instructor. Every flight is completely private.
- Doors-off visibility: Flying with the door open removes window glare and reflections, giving you wide-open sightlines from the San Fernando Valley to the ocean.
Why "Low and Slow" With the Door Open Feels So Different
In a commercial jet—or even behind the closed window of a modern cabin plane—you watch the city through a frame. In the Cub, the landscape is right there beside you.
Because the J-3 Cub cruises at a gentle pace beneath its high yellow wing, photographers have time to line up shots of the mountains, piers, and shoreline without fighting window reflections. Even if you aren't bringing a camera, feeling the warm valley air give way to the coastal breeze while listening to the engine over your headset is an experience no enclosed tour can match. No aviation experience is required; your Certified Flight Instructor flies the plane and introduces you to how the Cub's simple stick-and-rudder controls work.
The Coastal Route: From Van Nuys to the Pacific Shoreline
After lifting off from Van Nuys Airport (KVNY), N33141 climbs gently over the San Fernando Valley and crosses the Santa Monica Mountains toward the ocean. Following the coastline, your route passes:
- Santa Monica Pier and the bay shoreline
- The Venice Beach boardwalk and canals
- The Malibu coastline, added when weather and airspace allow, plus sweeping views back across the Los Angeles Basin

How Your Hour at Van Nuys Airport Works
1. Booking and Confirmation
The Vintage Piper Cub Doors-Off Flight is from $300 for 1 guest and lasts about 1 hour total, including your ground briefing and flight time (flying daily, including the popular 3:00 pm coastal slot, 7 days a week by appointment). Book online at /book/ or call (818) 683-3404. Email confirmation usually arrives within 4 hours.
2. Arrival at KVNY
Meet your instructor at our hangar at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Unit Juliet 5, Van Nuys, CA 91406. Plenty of free parking—including wheelchair-accessible parking—is right in front of the office. Because we fly back-to-back appointments, please arrive no more than 10 minutes early and no later than 10 minutes after your booked time.
3. Preflight Checks and Cub Walk-Around
Before every flight, your instructor completes a weather and airspace briefing, checks Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), and calculates weight and balance. You then get a 5-minute guest briefing and an up-close introduction to the 1940 J-3 Cub and its flight controls before strapping in for takeoff.
What to Know Before You Book
- One guest only: Because of the Cub's two-seat tandem design, no extra passengers can ride on the same flight. Friends or couples can book back-to-back flights or choose a Discovery Flight in our Cessna 172 (N990B) or Piper Archers (N84015, N9318C), which can take an extra passenger for +$50.
- 190 lb maximum guest weight: The maximum guest weight in the Piper J-3 Cub is 190 lb (compared to 230 lb in our Cessna and Piper Archers, and 210 lb in our Pitts S-2B). Minimum age is 12 (parental consent required under 18).
- What to wear: It can be breezy with the door open, especially near the coast. Wear comfortable layers, bring a light jacket, and wear closed-toe shoes and sunglasses.
- Cameras and phones: Cameras and phones are welcome on the Cub as long as they are secured with a wrist or neck strap. Or skip holding a camera and add our photo and video package (+$50).
- Safety and weather: As detailed on our Safety page, we have had zero incidents since 2017 over thousands of flights, carry $1M insurance, and fly with Gold Seal-led instructors. If the weather isn't safe, we cancel or reschedule at no cost to you on the morning of your flight (calling first, then following up by text and email). See our weather cancellation guide and Gift Cards page (or our flight gift card guide) to give a Cub flight as a gift.
