Biplane Aerobatic Flight Over Los Angeles: Inside the Pitts S-2B
Loops, aileron rolls, and inverted flight over Southern California in a legendary two-seat biplane—tailored to your comfort level from takeoff to touchdown.

Most scenic flights over Southern California are designed to keep the horizon level. You climb out smoothly, bank gently around the Hollywood Sign or the coastline, and enjoy the view through a cabin window. An aerobatic flight in Los Angeles flips that script—literally. Strapped into the front seat of a Pitts S-2B biplane departing Van Nuys Airport (KVNY), you get the airshow seat while an FAA-certified aerobatic instructor flies loops, rolls, and vertical climbs matched to the exact intensity you want.
Whether you are an aviation enthusiast who wants to feel what a competition biplane can do, a thrill-seeker chasing a bucket-list ride, or a pilot curious about unusual attitudes, here is everything that happens on our Biplane Aerobatic Flight over LA.
Why the Pitts S-2B Is an Aerobatic Icon
When Curtis Pitts designed his compact biplane in the 1940s, he had one goal: out-roll everything else in the sky. Decades later, the Pitts Special still defines competition aerobatics.
Our Pitts S-2B on Our Fleet is the two-seat model built for pure performance:
- Engine and speed: A 260-horsepower engine delivers a top speed around 200 mph, a 275-mile range, and a brisk climb rate.
- G-rating: The airframe is rated from -3 G to +6 G, engineered for the positive and negative loads of aerobatic flight.
- Inverted fuel and oil systems: Standard aircraft engines rely on gravity, so they sputter upside down. The Pitts S-2B has specialized fuel and oil systems built to keep running smoothly during sustained inverted flight.
- Tandem cockpit: You sit in the front seat with wraparound views over the short wings while your instructor flies from the rear seat.
Opportunities to fly in a Pitts S-2B are rare, making it one of our favorite flight gift cards for milestone birthdays, graduations, and holidays.
You Choose the Intensity: From Gentle Rolls to Full Sequences
One common myth about an aerobatic flight in Los Angeles is that you have to commit to an all-out rollercoaster from start to finish. At Fly LA Experience, the flight is built around you.
Before you step onto the ramp, you and your instructor plan the flight together. You can fly out to the aerobatic practice box for maneuvers, or you can fly our standard Los Angeles scenic route in the Pitts S-2B. In the practice box, some guests want a few gentle rolls and a loop. Others want a continuous, high-energy sequence.
You are never locked into a script once airborne. You and your instructor talk constantly over noise-canceling headsets, and before every maneuver your pilot tells you what is coming, where to look, and what the G-forces will feel like. You also learn a simple hand signal during your preflight briefing that brings the airplane straight back to smooth, level flight whenever you want a break.
Possible Maneuvers You Can Experience
Depending on the pace you choose, your custom sequence can include:
- Loops: Full vertical circles where positive G-forces press you comfortably into your seat, even upside down at the top.
- Aileron rolls: A quick 360-degree turn around the airplane's long axis as the Los Angeles horizon spins around the canopy.
- Hammerheads: A vertical climb until the airplane slows, a crisp pivot at the top, and a vertical dive back into level flight.
- Inverted flight: Sustained upside-down flying with the valley or coastline suspended above your head.
- Tail slides: The biplane climbs straight up, slows to a stop, slides backward briefly, and recovers smoothly.
- Immelmann turns: A classic dogfight maneuver combining a half-loop upward followed immediately by a half-roll back to upright flight.
On a typical passenger sequence, pulls reach about +3 G to +4 G—as if you briefly weighed three or four times as much—paired with short moments of lightness.
Aerobatic Box or the Scenic Route
You and your instructor pick one plan before you fly, and both of them are in the Pitts S-2B.
- Aerobatic practice box: Fly out to the practice area and spend the flight on maneuvers. The pace is yours, from a few gentle rolls and a loop to a continuous, high-energy sequence.
- Standard scenic route: Fly our usual Los Angeles landmark route in the biplane. Depending on weather and airspace, that includes the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory, Universal Studios, Downtown LA, Dodger Stadium, the Hollywood Bowl, Beverly Hills, Century City, the Getty Museum, Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, and the Malibu coastline.

Step by Step: Your Day at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY)
1. Booking and Confirmation
Book online at /book/ or call (818) 683-3404. The Pitts S-2B flight starts from $450 for about 1 hour total and takes 1 guest. Coming with friends? Book back-to-back flights so everyone gets a turn. Email confirmation usually arrives within 4 hours.
2. Arrival and Parking
Meet us at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Unit Juliet 5, Van Nuys, CA 91406, open 7 days a week by appointment. Plenty of free parking is available right in front of the office, including wheelchair-accessible parking. Because we fly back-to-back, please arrive no more than 10 minutes early or late.
3. Preflight Weather Check and 5-Minute Guest Briefing
Every flight starts with a weather and airspace briefing, Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) check, and weight-and-balance calculation. Your instructor then walks you through a 5-minute guest briefing and aircraft walk-around covering your five-point harness, FAA-required parachute, headset, and hand signals.
4. Harness, Parachute, and Mounted Video
Federal rules require everyone on board to wear a parachute during intentional aerobatics, which we provide along with a five-point harness and noise-canceling headset. Loose items aren't safe under G-forces, so phones and handheld cameras stay on the ground. Add the cockpit-mounted photo and video package (+$50) to record every maneuver.
Before You Book: Age, Weight, Preparation, and Weather
- Age and weight limits: Minimum age is 16 (parent or guardian consent required under 18). Typical maximum passenger weight in the Pitts S-2B is 210 lb due to aircraft limits—call (818) 683-3404 to confirm before booking.
